Description: Geoscience Information Society (GIS) Archives contains material concerning the foundation, organization & history of GIS. Correspondence, directories, reports, minutes of meetings, photo albums, copies of the GIS Newsletter (1966-), & official records relating to the organization's constitution & by-laws, incorporation,awards, official membership records, officers, annual & executive board meetings, history, publications, membership & library directories, research of members & GIS' relationship to other professional organizations including the American Geological Institute (AGI), Geological Society of America (GSA), Special Libraries Association (SLA), Council on Library Resources (CLR), American Library Association (ALA), Council on Education in the Geological Sciences (CEGS), & its relation to government offices including the U.S. Geological Sciences (CEGS), & its relation to government offices including the U.S. Geological Survey & the Bureau of Mines. The GIS is concerned with bibliographical problems of geology librarians, subject headings & indexing for geological materials & the placement & education of scientific librarians. The series includes the files of Ruth A. Bristol (1964-73), early organizer & member of the Executive Committee, Harriet Wallace Smith, president of GIS (1967), Mark W. Pangborn, president (1966), Sarra Aull, GIS representative to the AGI (1971-72) & secretaries Ruth L. Keefer (1973-74), & Barbara M. Christy (1975), Mary Scott (1976-77); Elizabeth Behrendt (1977-78); Caryl Shields (11/78-11/80) & Nancy Crossfield (11/80-9/82; and presidents of GIS (1968, 1976-82, 1987-95, 1998-2000).
