Position available:  .40 Graduate Assistant position available in the Education and Social Science Library. This position is available from January 15, 2010 through May 15, 2010, with a possibility of continuation for Fall 2010. (Grad hourly funds may be available for Summer 2010.)

 

Duties:  Under the direction of the Reference Coordinator, assists in providing information services in the areas of anthropology, education, political science, psychology, sociology, social work, communication, women & gender studies, and Asian American studies as well as in the special collections of Arms Control and Disarmament, children's books, curriculum materials, test instruments, the occult sciences and parapsychology, and the Human Relations Area Files.  These services are provided for a wide range of library users including faculty, graduate students, undergraduate students, and community members.  Participates in the development and implementation of new and innovative services.  Night and weekend hours are required.  Specific duties under the direction of the Education Subject Specialist include book selection for the curriculum collection, development of user aids, collection maintenance, and cataloging. 

 

Qualifications:

 

Required:   The ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.  Familiarity with and interest in children's and young adult literature or K-12 education materials.  Applicants should have formally applied and been accepted into the Graduate School of Library and Information Science (or be currently enrolled in GSLIS).

 

Desirable:   Strong interest or background in the areas of education, anthropology, sociology, social work, psychology, political science; communication, women & gender studies, and/or Asian American studies; experience in libraries; experience with electronic resources; teaching or leadership experience; cataloging experience.  Knowledge of current cataloging practices, Connexion software, LCSH, and Dewey Decimal classification.
