Visiting Research Programmer University Archives/Grainger Engineering Library Information Center - 2

As soon as possible, after closing date of search.  1 year initial visiting appointment, may be renewed up to three years depending on availability of funding. 

Duties and Responsibilities

The Research Programmer will be appointed to support current digital library research projects ongoing at the University of Illinois Archives and Grainger Engineering Library Information Center, including grant-funded projects.  Appointee will work on at least two different projects, reporting to project PIs or co-PIs. May also provide support towards design & development of internally funded new or experimental digital library services. This research and grant funded position will provide an opportunity to participate in design, development, and testing of innovative, cutting-edge archival and digital library systems using the Open Archives Initiative (OAI) technologies.   The Incumbent will collaborate with archivists and experienced research programmers in Grainger Library, who have established an international reputation in the digital library research community.

Technologies used in these research programs are complimentary and overlapping with those used in production library services. The Library hosts its own developmental Linux and Windows servers, virtual server cluster, and SAN. Research projects are implemented using a wide range of programming languages and technologies, including: PHP, JavaScript, VBScript/AJAX, SQL, XHTML, CSS, XML, XSL-T, XSL-FO, OAI-PMH and OAI-ORE, Microsoft ASP and ASP.Net, Ruby on Rails, SOLR and Lucene, Java, C++, and Perl. Responsibilities will include: development and customization of the Web tool, Archon, a content management system for describing and providing access to archival collection information and digital objects, and development work on the ASHO OAI-PMH harvesting software, SOLR/Lucene database software development, and the deployment of additional humanities-based vertical web sites using the ASHO technologies; database design, administration, and programming; writing documentation and discussion of technical results for inclusion in conference papers and reports to project sponsors; and providing technical assistance to and consultation with Library & GSLIS faculty and staff research partners.

Qualifications:

Required:

Bachelor’s degree; demonstrated experience using advanced Windows and/or Linux applications for creating Web-delivered content and services; demonstrated knowledge of web application programming using PHP, JavaScript/AJAX, and XHTML; demonstrable knowledge of relational database design principles and SQL; ability to work productively in a collaborative team environment and manage multiple priorities; ability to remain knowledgeable of current and newly evolving technologies; and effective oral and written communication and customer service skills.

Desired/Preferred:

Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field; master's degree in Library and Information Science; one year of library and archives work experience; one year of demonstrated experience using the Archon API, proficiency with XHTML, CSS, and web accessibility best practices; experience using XML and XML-related tools and technologies including XML authoring tools, XML Schema, XSL-T; DBA experience with SQL Server 2008, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Lucene, and/or Oracle 9i+; Client-side programming and application design/development experience using Windows, Mac OS X, or Linux/UNIX environments, particularly using Java, C++, Perl, Visual Basic/VB.Net, Ruby, or similar high-level programming language; and hands-on experience installing and administering multi-user applications and Web services on Windows XP/Vista/2000 Server/2003 Server and/or Linux platforms.

Salary

Salary commensurate with credentials and experience. The position is a visiting Academic Professional appointment.

Terms of Appointment

12 annual sick-leave days (cumulative), plus an additional 13 sick-leave days (non-cumulative) available, if needed, each year; health insurance requiring a small co-payment is provided to employee (with the option to purchase coverage for spouse and dependents); required participation in State Universities Retirement System (SURS) (8% of annual salary is withheld and is refundable upon termination), with several options for participation in additional retirement plans; newly-hired employees are covered by the Medicare portion of Social Security and are subject to its deduction.
