Specialized Research Services Offered through IRRC
The Information Resource Retrieval Center (IRRC) serves as the interlibrary loan department for the University Library. It offers specialized services through two offices: one for borrowing, and one for lending.
The Interlibrary Borrowing Office is utilized heavily by the campus, primarily due to the extensive amount of unique research conducted by faculty. Each year, it processes approximately 37,000 requests for titles that are unavailable through Illinet Online, a statewide catalog of 56 library collections. Campus researchers also borrow nearly 60,000 titles from Illinet Online. Many of the titles are owned by the Library but unavailable at the time of request; however, many are available only from Illinet Online, making this catalog an important resource for the campus.
The Borrowing Office provides two specialized services for the campus. Document Delivery Service is a free delivery service that posts electronic copies of articles to the Web for viewing and printing (a fee-based rush option is available). The office also offers ILLiad, an online interlibrary loan service that allows researchers to submit orders, review their accounts, and retrieve requests that have been filled electronically.
The Interlibrary Lending Office serves libraries and researchers worldwide. Each year, it processes more than 130,000 requests for materials from the Library’s collections. One-third of these requests are generated by Illinet Online partner library patrons. The office serves the campus through UIUC DocExpress, a convenient, fee-based copy service that reproduces journal articles in the campus system (as allowed by copyright law) and electronically delivers orders within 48 hours.
Through its specialized services, IRRC provides quicker access to library materials and enhances the availability of library collections in the state, nation, and world. Faculty are encouraged to utilize these services by visiting http://www.library.uiuc.edu/irrc/.
